How to avoid parasitic eye infection caught by common bedroom habit that millions of people do Are you guilty of allowing this common habit?

A doctor has revealed how you can avoid getting a parasitic eye infection which is caused by a very common sleeping habit.

When it comes to setting boundaries with pets, most of us are guilty of allowing our beloved four-legged friends to jump up onto our beds and sofas, despite insisting that we would do exactly the opposite of that.

However, when it comes to dogs, one eye doctor is keen to reiterate why you should be setting boundaries with your beloved pooch.

Sharing this information is US physician Dr Dan Friederich, who specialises in sharing tips on how to look after your eyes as well as other medical advice tips.

One of his videos recently went viral after Dr Friederich revealed that he can often tell if a person allows their dog to sleep in the same bed as them due to the appearance of parasites in their eyelashes.

Pretty grim, right?

In the clip, he says its happens ‘more often than you might think’ when it comes to spotting parasites such as demodex in people’s eyes.

“There is a common mite called demodex that we see in the eyelashes that is a parasite. And the minute I see it in someone’s eyes, the first question I ask is, ‘do you sleep with your dog at night?’,” he explained.

Because that’s a really common cause of having these parasites in your eyelashes.

“Don’t sleep with your animals if you can help it.”

What are demodex bugs and how do I get rid of them?

Although Dr Friederich clarified that all of us have small amounts of these bugs naturally living on our skin (which is a pretty sobering thought on its own), you don’t want to be adding in any bugs chilling out on your dog as this will lead to conditions such as blepharitis, which cause eye irritation, blurred vision and the dreaded crusties.

So, if you’re guilty of letting your pet pooch share the bed and want to know how you can protect yourself from getting an eye infection, don’t worry, as there are plenty of ways you can make your your bedsheets are sparkling clean.

Guidance for anyone suffering from eye infections, due to allowing pets to sleep on their beds, includes treating any impacted bedding or clothing items in the same manner as you would something which could be exposed to fleas.

This means either washing and tumble-drying at an extremely high temperature or sealing the items in an airtight plastic bag to kill off the bugs before washing as normal.

Alternatively, you could just get a cat, as our feline friends don’t carry the same risk when it comes to the parasite.

Doctor warns over parasitic eye infection caught by common act that millions do

The eye doctor is left asking the same question to every single patient

An eye doctor has opened up on finding parasitic eye infections in his patients that he says are commonly caused by one common act that millions of people partake in every single day.

Dr Dan Friederich is a certified eye doctor from the United States of America who has racked up thousands of views across Instagram and TikTok, giving out critical advice to his followers on how to look after their eyes while also spotting danger signs.

He also offers general health tips given his medical background.

Among the warnings from Dr Friederich is an alert over your chances of an ‘early death’ relating to how much time you spend in bed each night.

And for Dr Friederich, when he spots this, he is left asking the same old question to his patients.

“How often do I see parasites in people’s eyes? Well, more often than you might think,” Dr Friederich says.

“And it’s mainly because people sleep with their pets in the bed.

“There is a common mite called demodex that we see in the eyelashes that is a parasite. And the minute I see it in someone’s eyes, the first question I ask is, ‘do you sleep with your dog at night?’.”

He explains: “Because that’s a really common cause of having these parasites in your eyelashes.

“Don’t sleep with your animals if you can help it.”

That’s right, no more dogs at the bottom of the bed if you want to avoid getting these nasties that can be quite painful, according to research.

Responding to viewers asking why demodex can be harmful, Dr Friederich says ‘everyone has small amounts’ of the parasite on their body. But, in high numbers, ‘They can cause eye irritation, blurred vision and sometimes loss of lashes’, he explains.

“They’re easily treated with Cliradex when people actually have infestation.”

According to the American Academy of Ophthalmology, demodex bugs are associated with a skin condition called rosacea.

“They are an inhabitant of the skin’s normal microbiome; almost everyone has some demodex,” said Gerami D. Seitzman, MD, corneal and external disease specialist at University of California San Francisco.

But when it becomes too much, they can cause blepharitis, an eye condition that causes inflammation of the eyelids, resulting in redness, itchiness, and crusting.

If your dog does sleep on your bed and you get these nasties in your eye, you should treat them like you would fleas. That means washing all your bedding at a high temperature, following by a high temperature in your tumble dryer.

Alternatively, you can keep the sheets in an air tight, sealed plastic bag for three days to kill the bugs before washing as normal.

Dr Friederich adds that the parasite is not found in house cats.

There’s a few things you should steer clear of to keep your teeth pearly white

A dental expert has shared a few simple ways you can avoid staining your teeth.

We can thank content creators, Love Island stars and celebrities for making us more self-conscious about our gnashers.

I mean, if you were to take a scroll on any social app, you’d likely be greeted by endless pics of perfect, pearly white teeth.

Veneers appear to be the ‘in thing’ right now, with more and more people flying out to Turkey to get their cut-price work done to feel that bit more confident.

But what if I were to tell you that there was a way to do this naturally, at home?

Dentistry and health expert Dr Shaadi Manouchehri, known as @dr.shaadi.manouchehri on social media, posted a video on TikTok about bad habits, like drinking coffee or brushing after breakfast, that could cause damage to your enamel.

This could result in darker, stained teeth that will have you sporting a yellow tinge when you smile.

If you’ve been guilty of skipping brushing your teeth before bed or after an acidic drink don’t worry as, according to Regenerate Enamel Science, there are several ways you can avoid or rescue discoloured teeth.

Specialised toothpastes

Of course, not every product in the supermarket which claims to give you a Hollywood smile within a handful of days will work as advertised, but it’s likely they may be able help.

It’s also worth looking for a toothpaste which combines ingredients such as baking soda and hydrogen peroxide as bleaching agents can help improve the appearance of yellow teeth.

However, make sure you don’t overdo it as excessive use can also damage your teeth.

According to the American Dental Association, hydrogen peroxide should not exceed a concentration of 3.6 percent, while Colgate states that a percentage between three and six is safe for use.

Whitening strips and trays have become increasingly popular over the past couple of years as a quick-fix method, however, it’s important to use them sparingly.

Toothpaste containing charcoal can also be beneficial but, like whitening strips, it’s important that you don’t overuse it as it can end up damaging your enamel.

Foods to avoid

Coffee and milky tea are, of course, major offenders in staining your teeth. However, they’re not the only food and drink which can cause your teeth to develop a yellow appearance.

Fizzy drinks, citrus fruit drinks and red wine can also cause staining due to their sugary and/or acidic nature – which is abrasive to your teeth.

Foods such as curry, tomato-based sauces and berries can also cause erosion to your enamel.

We’re not suggesting you live off a diet of just water and plain vegetables – that would be miserable – but the key thing to remember with any food is moderation.

Don’t overdo the sugary foods, maintain good dental health and throw in the occasional use of hydrogen peroxide toothpaste and your teeth will most likely be fine.

This simple check is one you can do while watching TV or sitting at your desk

Here is a super simple test which takes just 60 seconds and could reveal if you’re suffering from a common health problem.

Modern technology such as smartphones and computers has improved our lives, but our excessive connectivity is something which one part of our wrists and hands won’t be thanking us for.

Phrases such as ‘smartphone hand’ and ‘texting claw’ have been coined in the past couple of years to refer to the strain placed on our digits.

When it comes to people who spend several hours a day tapping away at computers, carpal tunnel syndrome is something you’re at a very real risk of developing.

What is carpal tunnel syndrome?

According to the NHS, carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is a condition which occurs when the median nerve of the wrist is compressed.

Symptoms of CTS typically include an ache or pain in your fingers, hand or arm, as well as a tingling or ‘pins and needles’ sensation in the same area, numb hands, and reduced grip strength.

CTS was previously caused by wrist injuries, diabetes and pregnancy – however, the condition is increasingly being associated with office workers due to the fact that they spend around seven to eight hours a day tapping away on keyboards.

Treatments for CTS include painkillers, wrist exercises, and wearing a support brace. Severe cases can potentially need surgical intervention.

How to tell if you may be suffering from carpal tunnel syndrome

If you’re worried that you may be suffering from CTS, there is a very simple test you can do right away, which doesn’t involve the use of any medical equipment.

Sharing the test via his TikTok account, US-based doctor Dr Myro Figura explained that placing the backs of both your hands together (while pointing down) and holding the position for 60 seconds – adding that it was the ‘number one test’ for diagnosing carpal tunnel syndrome.

Figura went on to explain that anyone who experiences pain, tingling or numbness in their first three fingers (thumb, index and middle) may have the condition.

Going on to explain how the test – which is referred to clinically as Phalen’s manoeuvre or Phalen’s test – works, he continued: “The reason why that works is because Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is impingement of median nerve at the wrist. This motion puts pressure on the nerve and that nerve innovates these three fingers.”

Thankfully, there’s plenty of advice out there on the internet on how to make adjustments for CTS caused by office work, which includes using a wrist support, an ergonomic keyboard, adjusting your chair to allow for proper wrist alignment and taking breaks to stretch your wrists and hands.
