Jake Gyllenhaal is set to return for a sequel to Road House, as announced by Amazon MGM Studios during their first Upfronts presentation.
This news comes less than two months after the film premiered on Prime Video. While details about the sequel are scarce, the reboot of the 1989 Patrick Swayze classic included a mid-credits scene that sparked speculation about a sequel.
In that scene, it seemed like Gyllenhaal’s character, Dalton, had defeated Knox (played by Conor McGregor).
However, it was revealed that Knox, visibly healed and furious, was causing trouble at the hospital where he was supposed to be recovering.
The studio didn’t provide details on whether McGregor will be back for a rematch or what’s next for Dalton after he leaves the Florida Keys and his bouncer life behind.
There is no word yet on when production will begin on the sequel, nor is it clear if the same writers will return.
Gyllenhaal’s Roadhouse remake was a hit with audiences, attracting nearly 80 million global viewers since it debuted on Prime Video on March 21.
Over 50 million people watched it during its first two weekends, making it Amazon MGM Studios’ most-watched film debut ever on a worldwide basis, according to the studio.
Capitalizing on this success, Amazon wasted no time in announcing the sequel.
Details about the plot are still under wraps, but the studio has confirmed that Gyllenhaal will return as Dalton, the tough-as-nails former UFC fighter who takes on a bouncer job at a rowdy roadhouse.
A release date for Jake Gyllenhaal’s Road House 2 has not been announced yet.
