The tough life of Pattie Mallette

When she was 17 she was raped and refused to do an abortion: 28 years later her son is the most famous star in the world – you won’t believe who he grew up to be.

Pattie Mallette may not be a name you recognize at first, but she is the mother of Justin Bieber, one of the biggest pop stars today.

Mallette had a difficult life. She became a mother at 17 and now she is a constant presence in Justin Bieber’s life.

In her 2013 book Nowhere but Up, Mallette shared about her difficult childhood and disclosed that she had experienced sexual abuse from various individuals during her youth.

She experienced abuse from both a babysitter and a friend’s grandfather. She mentioned, “I went through sexual assault numerous times, to the point where it started to feel like a regular thing as time passed. It’s a weird mix of recognizing it’s not right while also feeling like it’s something familiar and usual.”

Regrettably, these events caused Mallette to turn to alcohol and drugs, which she battled with during her teenage years. She mentioned on the Today Show that it’s common for those who have experienced sexual abuse to feel ashamed and blame themselves, thinking that something is wrong with them.

When she was 17, Mallette tried to take her own life. After that, she was admitted to a mental health facility where she discovered she was pregnant shortly after being discharged. She had been in an on-and-off relationship with Jeremy Bieber, the father of her child, since she was 15. At one stage, she was involved in selling drugs and petty theft.

She gave birth to Justin Bieber in London, Ontario, on March 1, 1994.

Despite being a single mother, she focused all her attention on her son. Mallette recognized her son’s singing talent and enrolled him in the 2007 Stratford Star talent show, where he came in second place performing “So Sick” by Ne-Yo.

Mallette shared videos of Justin singing on YouTube so that her family and friends could see him. And that’s when someone important discovered his talent. The rest, as they say, is history.

Today, Mallette is not only a producer but also the author of a book that ranked 17th on the New York Times’ Bestseller List.

Despite her unconventional upbringing, this woman successfully raised her son and guided him to stardom.
